2019 CAC Veterans Match
Holtwood (31st July)
Twelve members attended this annual event at Holtwood (Shambles and Bascombes pools) on a warm and breezy day. With the exception of the winner, Pete Newbold (14lb 4oz), catches were very modest. Pete fed very lightly with expander pellets using them on the hook to take a nice net of tench plus a few crucians on the pole in the margin. Runner-up Bob Morrison (3lb 12oz) had crucians and a few small tench. After the match Pete Newbold was presented with the Sir John Mills Trophy while competitors enjoyed their customary meal at the Stocks Inn, Furzehill.
Wedgehill (6th October)
Dave Perkins took the honours in the final match of the series with a superb 83lb 8oz of carp. Dave White cam second with 59lb 8oz. That win was enough to clinch the series for Mr Perkins who pipped Mr White into 2nd place overall after a thrilling finale. Next up is the Autumn/Winter run of matches to be held at Winkton.
Wedgehill (8th September)
A thrilling match saw Dave White smash the club’s match record with a superb haul of 130lb, made up predominantly of hard-fighting carp. Dave Parkins was second with 77lb.
Holtwood (11th August)
The fourth Club Match was held on Millers Pool in blustery conditions, though the rain held off. Jon Bass (15lb 2oz) won with 8 tench and a dozen crucians. Keith Baker and Dave Perkins caught roach and rudd all day to both top 10lb, with Keith finishing 2nd by half a pound.
Wedgehill (14th July)
The second match of the series was held at Wedgehill. Conditions were tough, with bright sun and hot temperatures being far from ideal. The fish didn’t seem to mind though, Dave White winning on the day with a superb hail of mainly carp for 84lb 11oz.
Hucklesbrook (30th June)
The first match of the Club Summer Series was held on the road bank at Hucklesbrook. Cooler conditions after several days of hot weather saw plenty of fish feeding on the bottom and later cruising near the surface. Catches were dominated by roach of all sizes, with some rudd, perch and three moderate tench. Winner on the day was Dave Perkins (23lb 14oz), including mainly good roach, followed by Alan Snook (13lb 3oz) and Jon Bass (11lb 8oz). Thanks to Dave for organising the match.
Wedgehill (8th September)
Wedgehill (22nd August)
Twelve members fished the middle pond on a warm, sunny and calm afternoon. Barry James (63lb) took top weight on his first outing in the Series. Dave White was second (52lb 13oz) and there were five other
weights over 30lbs. Barry and Dave alternated between method feeder and pole to keep carp coming throughout the afternoon. With one match remaining in the Series Dave White and Alan Snook are tied on 14 points, so it all draws to a climax on 8th Sept at Wedgehill.
Please contact Dave Perkins (07598861573) if you wish to fish.
Hucklesbrook (8th August)
Our 6th Over-55s match in the 9-match Series saw 12 members pegged along Hucklesbrook roadside bank on a very calm and overcast day. Under easy fishing conditions hopes were high for good sport with roach. In the first peg nearest the car park Alan Snook took 11lb of roach and perch to win the match, nearby Keith Baker was second with 8lb which included a small tench. Other competitors were left
scratching their heads as the fish failed to come on the feed and John Clayton (a sprightly 89) won his section with 3lb 3oz. With 3 matches remaining, Dave White and Keith Baker are well-placed in the Series and last years main contenders (Jon Bass and Dave Perkins) appear out of the running. The next two matches are at Wedgehill bottom and middle ponds (22nd Aug and 5th Sept)
Holtwood (18th July)
Wedgehill (4th July)
Wedgehill (Middle Pond) was the venue for the 4th match in the series with eleven members experiencing hot and sunny conditions which had the carp cruising and not feeding at most pegs. Dave White (59lb 8oz) won by a narrow margin from Dave(?) Way (57lb 4oz), with Jon Bass 3rd (36lb 8oz), Dave White (pictured) had some good hard-fighting carp using a method feeder. Our next Over-55s match is at Holtwood (Thurs 18th July) and the Annual Veterans (Over-65) trophy will be fished for at the same venue (Wed 31st July) with an after-match meal. For those wishing to fish and not already booked in for the Veterans Match/meal please contact Jon Bass – 01305 852585 – before 19th July.
The 3rd Over-55s Match on 20th June was attended by 13 members at Wedgehill, with heavy showers and very brief glimses of the sun. At the draw before the match it was confirmed that all nets were completely dry. Signs of feeding fish disappeared as the match started, though Steve Vandenburg (36lb 12oz) got off to a flier before slowing down later in the match. Dave Perkins (57lb 14oz) had a late run of carp including a 10lb fish from the margin for a comfortable win. Mike Gotobed (32lb 12oz) was third and the top weights were taken on method feeder. The next Over 55s match (Thurs 4th July) is at Wedgehill, with a Sunday Club match at Hucklesbrook road bank (30th June), please book in beforehand with Dave Perkins (07598861573). A reminder that Club biosecurity requirements are in operation, with checks on nets/related gear made prior to each match.
Our second match of the series was switched to Holtwood with Hucklesbrook temporarily closed, Millers pool remained open for members not in the competition. Thirteen members took part and the top four weights came from Shambles with poor catches on Bascombes. Keith Baker (below – 11lb 10oz) had small roach, rudd, perch and crucians, plus small tench, using single maggot. John Clayton (10lb 8oz) was runner-up with small fish plus two bonus late tench and Jon Bass (8lb 8oz) was third. On Bascombes Pool the top weight was surprisingly low, Dave White won this section with only 3lb 8oz. Our next match is scheduled for Wedgehill (Thurs 20th June), please book-in with Dave Perkins (07598861573) if you would like to fish and the Top Pond will remain open to members.
Fourteen members attended split between Shambles and Bascombes. Recent catches have been good but most competitors struggled to catch much on the day. A few crucians and tench boosted weights dominated by small roach and rudd. Off to a good start in the Series were Dave White (6lb 8oz) from the dam on Bascombes and Keith Baker (5lb 6oz) from Shambles. Weed growth was much less than last May, so the dye looks to be working.
Looking forward to the next match which is on Hucklesbrook (Thurs 06.06.19), please book in through Dave Perkins (07598861573).
