Over recent years there has been an explosion of young barbel appearing throughout the Hampshire Avon. The cause is unknown but many believe the severe floods of 2011/12 scoured the compacted gravel river bed, reinvigorating the spawning grounds and forming the basis for an increase in healthy, natural breeding. These small fish have been caught on our waters form Redbrook right down to Lower Winkton, the majority reported to trotted or feeder fished maggots.
This truly is a wonderful sign for the future. To help us monitor this revival we would appreciate reports of any similar fish being sent to either our forum, the office or our social media pages. Below are a few photos of fish caught this season that ranged from a few ounce to 5lb.
