This year’s Over 60’s match series has drawn to a closed, with 3 members tied on 7 points (based on their best results in 4 of the 5 matches). A comparison of total weights in their best 4 scoring matches revealed Dave Perkins had 117lb, Jon Bass 100lb and Keith Baker 64lb. So congratulations to a determined Dave Perkins for winning the 2017 Over-60s Series, overcoming illness during the Series.
Next season we are considering holding a few more matches and lowering the qualifying age to 55 as there was a drop in members competed this year. Details will be put to the Committee for discussion with decisions this autumn in readiness for next summer. Individual match reports are below.
Over 60’s Match Wedgehill 6/9/17
Recent unsettled weather meant the final match in the Series had a quiet start with few carp feeding. Jon Bass (49lb 4oz) used method feeder and later pole-fished paste for a clear win. Alan Bates (29lb 1oz) had some surprise carp on tares and Keith Baker (28lb 2oz) followed closely with a mix of carp and roach on maggot. Over 220lb of fish were weighed-in despite blaring music from next door and contractors moving tree stumps in readiness for the otter fence.
Over 60’s Match Hucklesbrook 24/8/17
Catches were dominated by roach with only a couple of small tench and carp. Keith Baker (20lb 8oz) and Dave Perkins (17lb 7oz) kept very busy through the afternoon. Not all pegs were required so the few carp anglers in residence were pegged around and no conflicts arose. The average weight topped 8lb which is much better than our last match here in 2015.
Over 60’s Match Holtwood 9/8/17
Eleven members fished the Veterans Match at Holtwood on 9th August. Both Shambles and Bascombe pools were pegged. The day was wet and windy. Catches were generally modest and only the winner Kieth Baker (8lb 10oz) and runner-up Alec Hallett (5lb 14oz) kept the bites coming. After the match a welcome hot meal was enjoyed at the Stocks Inn, Furzehill and we raised a glass to the recently departed Mick Maidment.
Over 60’s Match – Wedgehill 3/8/17
The 3rd CAC Over-60s match at Wedgehill (3rd Aug) was fished on the middle lake and the total catch once again exceeded 250lbs, with 6 weights over 30lb. Dave Perkins drew the same peg as in the first match and took 40lb 12oz of carp using method feeder to the island. Jon Bass was second with 37lb 8oz on pole-fished corn in the margin, with Jim Haskell just 6oz adrift for third. Jim’s catch included one carp of 9lb 8oz (pictured).
The Veterans (Over-65) Match is 11am draw at Holtwood car park on Wed 9th Aug, followed by our next Over-60s match at 11am Hucklesbrook on Thurs 24th Aug.

Over 60’s Match – Holtwood 6/7/17
Following the excellent catches at Wedgehill in our first match it was back down to earth at Holtwood with most struggling to catch small roach, rudd, perch and a few tench. At least a dozen small chub were taken in Bascombes Pool (middle pond). Tench and crucians were hard to catch in Millers Pool on a hot sunny day. Kieth Baker won with 9lb 9oz from peg 21 on Bascombes and John Clayton took best weight on Millers Pool with 7lb 5oz mainly tench. The Series remains wide open with four tieing in first place. Thanks to Chairman Russell for the recent grass-cutting. Note revised earlier draw times of 11am for all remaining matches. It’s back to Wedgehill on Thurs 3rd August and our Veterans (Over-65) Match will be at Holtwood on Wed 9th August. If you’d like to fish, please book in with Jon Bass (01305 852585 – evenings).
Over 60’s Match – Wedgehill
Our first Over-60s match of the year was held at Wedgehill. Twelve members attended and caught over 250lb of fish from the middle lake. In wet and windy conditions Dave White sat twiddling his thumbs for two hours before the carp arrived at the far end of the lake. He then took full advantage to finish an easy winner with 69lb 11oz using method feeder.
Dave Perkins (41lb 1oz) was second and Jon Bass (27lb 2oz) third, again on method feeder.
The next Over-60s match is at Holtwood on Thursday 6th July. If you’d like to fish and have not booked in yet, please contact Jon Bass on 01305 852585 (evenings).
