A great day’s work today by the River Management chaps saw access improvements made to Sopley.
Regulars Adrian and Dave and were joined by Steve and Geoff to carry out works agreed with the Landowner. The plan is to gain access along the ridge of high ground on the side of the downstream wood which faces the Mill. That way, we can get to the main river opposite the top of Upper Winkton and the lower part of the Millstream. Around 30m of overhanging scrub and trees was cut and burned, around a third of what needs doing.
In addition, the Landowner has built a couple of quality crossings, one at the end of the path being cleared and more importantly, one over the carrier which cuts the fishery in two. A very good result, as that saves us a major job! They are a clever design, with timber structure mounted on concrete decking posts, set in postcrete. They should be secure against most floods.
Our chaps intend going back for the next couple of weeks to finish the job started today. The work is mainly cutting and burning with anyone willing to help out very much welcomed! Adrian posts regular updates on our forum so please get in touch.
